Debate and Controversy
The different points of view of beauty pageants are seen through the media and voices of the public. Some believe that beauty pageants create higher self esteem and help develop confidence while others see the harmful effects when trying to be the most beautiful contestant in the pageant. For example, one point of view is “These pageants are full with tears and tantrums putting and unnecessary amount of pressure on these little kids. Inappropriate. Makeup, heels, big hair, and fancy dresses. Along with skimpy outfits and belly showing. These kids parents get so upset when the kids do not do well. They should always be proud of their kids and do not need judges to tell them that.” An example of the opposite point of view is, “If you were told you were intelligent would you strive for academic perfection? Why not the same with beauty. Also lifelong friendships can be made. It can be fun to dress up and show yourself off, positive comments can give a feeling of confidence to the participants.” This explains that there will always be two sides to this issue, regardless of the fact that beauty pageants create a lot of harm to young girls there will support for these pageants. My issue has also had historical controversies that surround beauty pageants. For instance, Miss America pageants were controversial for decades for many reasons, not the least of which was the fact that they did not allow contestants who were not white to compete, and had other racist overtones. African Americans were first featured in the 1923 pageant — during a dance performance where they played slaves.” This illustrates the controversy for women who were non-white, beauty pageants are meant to express oneself and their beauty but non-white women were not allowed to. In conclusion, the debate and controversy still goes on, it might not be racial controversy anymore but the debate whether beauty pageants should be allowed still goes on today.
