Root CausesBeauty pageants can be categorize as both a cultural and social problem. As a cultural and social problem many feminists believe that beauty pageants are sexiest. “The beauty industry makes billions of dollars a year by reinforcing the idea that women aren’t attractive enough, in hopes they continue to buy products to help them become more attractive.” In order to produce profit out of women companies, including beauty pageants, destroy the natural image of what beauty is and what the meaning of ‘beautiful’ is

By destroying the meaning of beauty you destroy their minds, tricking them into believing that one who is judging knows exactly what beauty is. In addition to that “[beauty pageants] feed into a much greater, much more destructive cultural framework that cyclically works to dehumanize women and to reinforce an unattainable standard of beauty in the name of profit.” Without any realization the pageants dehumanize the value of women, in which their beauty and talents are used to make profits into corporations.
Additionally, some label the beauty contests as races, whereas not all ethnicities aren’t acknowledged. According to Caressa Cameron, Miss America of 2010” Since 1983 eight African American women have won the crown[ for Miss America].”19 She addresses the issues a social awareness although color women are allowed to participate in these contests their talents are overlooked. But this social issue can be traced back to the early 1900s, beauty pageants “ did not allow contestants who were not white to compete, and had other racist overtones.” African Americans were first featured in pageants in 1923. Although the rules have changed, contestants colors are still not receiving much attention. |
